Arora Akanksha Running for UN Secretary-General
Arora Akanksha, a staff member who works as the audit coordinator for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has announced her candidacy for UN Secretary-General and is set to be the only candidate to compete against incumbent António Guterres. Although she still has no national backing for her candidacy, Akanksha launched her grassroots campaign called UNOW on Twitter and other social media platforms on February 9.
Akanksha said her opponent Guterres has failed as United Nations secretary-general. “He has failed as a leader in the reform of the institution. He has failed as a refugee leader; He was in charge of the refugee agency before coming here, so she knows the plight of refugees. He knows their pain, their hope, better than most of us because he served them. However, when he came, he made no decision to prioritize resources for them, “she said.
