I learned about this tragedy while meeting with federal and local prosecutors and other law enforcement to focus on how we can collaborate to combat the rise of violent crime in central Illinois. We should appreciate the courage and service of the officers who have been at the forefront of this effort, and we pray for their safety while protecting our communities. ”
Illinois Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) read the following statement on the Senate floor before parliament pays homage to Oberheim for a while.
“This morning I found out that one of my best friends in the world was shot while on duty as a Champaign Police Officer who answered a domestic call – and while his situation was stable, his partner Officer Chris Oberheim put his life into service to protect those he had never met. My friend is a standup citizen, my son’s little one. She has coached the league team, works faithfully as a volunteer in our local communities on the AWANA church program for children, and is defined by her faith.
Although I don’t know Officer Oberheim, I spoke to a large number of people who did this morning. Chris is the father of four and her husband, a softball coach, and a senior in both the Champaign Police Department and the Decatur Police Department – she still has many friends who continue to serve in her family and law enforcement – all mourning her loss Today. I also spoke to the Monticello Schools Inspector, who noted how enormous the loss of the Monticello community was in Chris’s death. Both of these men exhibited the courage and selfless sacrifice that defines our brave men and women in Blue.
“Please join me as Chris’s family pray for the successful recovery of my injured friend and for keeping all our officers on Blue safe – they serve each of us. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.”
Oberheim is the first Champaign police officer killed on duty since Robert Tatman in 1967. Tatman was shot dead while the traffic stopped. His murder could not be solved.
