On Monday, in what would be one of his final interviews, Trill spoke about how he had always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father in the music industry.

“I never wanted to be like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan … none of that. I wanted to be like my dad,” he said on The Donnie Houston Podcast. “I don’t have to idolize a guy on TV or a fictional character. My OG was my dad.”

The television station reported that his father was a rapper “in the group Trinity Garden Cartel back in the 90’s under Rap-A-Lot Record” and Trill was managed by Bone of Boneafied Entertainment.

Cause of Death

Houston-based rapper Chucky Trill died after a shooting in Atlanta on Friday morning, PEOPLE was able to confirm. The fatal incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when officers received a call about a shooting on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Officers arrived on the scene to find Trill, whose birth name is Corey Detiege, inside a stopped car, authorities said.

Trill, who police said he had been shot at least once, was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Trill was the son of rapper D of Trinity Garden Cartel, a ’90s hip-hop group with Rap-A-Lot Records, and a cousin of The Botany Boyz’s C-Note.

In the wake of Trill’s death, those on the Houston music scene have taken to social media to share their condolences.

“Man never thought he would post like this for you little relatives … Dam Corey !!! Rest up??????” C-Note wrote on his Instagram. “I know Gator ? was there to greet you, family. The streets love no one.”

“Damn. This was a good man. Humble. Hardworking. Loyal. Determined. Focused. And he had the talent,” rapper Bun B, who shares a manager with Trill, posted on his Instagram. “Queen saw it and said to @boneafied ‘That boy is good. If he doesn’t have a manager, you should. ‘ And she did, putting everything she had into him. We are heartbroken this morning and send our deepest condolences to D, Bone, and all of his family, friends, and supporters. Buy or stream his music and let’s keep the memory of him alive. #RIPChuckyTrill. ”

Investigation Report

The police statement revealed that “the victim of this shooting was shot at least once and died in a local hospital. Detectives responded to the scene and began speaking with witnesses. There is currently no description of the suspect vehicle. ”

Added authorities:

Investigators believe there may be witnesses to the shooting or the events leading up to the shooting. Detectives are asking those people to come forward and contact the police department with any information they have. Information about the victim will be provided after she is identified and her family has been notified. The motive for this shooting is still under investigation.
