Douglas John Kantor died of his injuries at an Austin hospital at 12:01 p.m. Sunday, police said. Kantor’s family said he was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center.
“He was shot in the abdomen just below the rib cage, directly,” said Kanton’s brother, Nick Kanton. “He suffered from the moment of injury to the moment of his death, it was the scariest thing that ever occurred to me to wish on someone. It’s painful to discuss it, but I think the public deserves to know what my brother suffered. ”
The shooting left at least 14 people injured early Saturday in the 400 block of East 6th Street. Police say a young suspect is in custody. Another suspect remains at large.
During a briefing, Acting Police Chief Joseph Chacon said 11 people were receiving treatment at a hospital, while one victim went to another hospital, another received treatment in an emergency room, and another transported herself from the busy strip of Austin bars on 6th Street. Chacón told a news conference Saturday that most of the victims were innocent bystanders.

Shot Dead – Cause of Death
One victim died as a result of the mass shooting that injured 14, two critically, early Saturday in downtown Austin. On Sunday, the Austin Police Department identified the victim as 25-year-old Douglas John Kantor.
Authorities say he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital and was pronounced deceased at 12:01 p.m. Sunday. An additional victim remains in critical condition while the other twelve are said to be stabilized. Police have identified two suspects in the shooting, one of whom is a minor. The police detained them on Saturday afternoon. The second suspect is still at large.
Kantor was visiting Austin from Michigan, according to his family. In a statement, the family says Doug was “looking forward to marrying his high school sweetheart of 10 years and starting a family.”
“He was loved by all who knew him and had an infectious smile that lit up any room. He was loved by his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. This senseless tragedy has put an end to all his dreams, ”the family said in a statement to KXAN’s Jala Washington.
The family said Kantor is originally from Airmont, New York. He moved to Michigan and completed a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering in the state of Michigan. He worked in the IT department of Ford Motor Company. Kantor continued his education at the University of Michigan, earning his MBA.

Shortly after earning his bachelor’s degree, he was employed by the Ford Motor Company. While continuing his education at the University of Michigan, he purchased his first home and received his Master of Business degree. He motivated everyone he came in contact with, was a team player and advanced rapidly in Ford’s IT department working as a product manager. He also developed a website for his brother and his father’s heating and air conditioning business. He hoped to marry his high school sweetheart for 10 years and start a family. He was loved by all who knew him and had an infectious smile that lit up any room. He was loved by his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. This senseless tragedy has put an end to all his dreams. “
Austin Police are encouraging anyone in the community seeking support as a result of this event to contact Victim Services at 512-974-5037. According to her family, Jessica Ramirez was on 6th Street celebrating her 34th birthday when she was shot.
Her family says the single mother of five is fighting for her life and she needed back surgery due to the location of one of the shots. Ramírez’s mother created a GoFundMe page.
