Sergeant Lynwen Thomas was pronounced dead at the crash site around 18:45 GMT Thursday, on the A40 westbound near Bancyfelin. Dyfed-Powys Police have asked witnesses to contact them.
Police Chief Mark Collins said it was a “terribly sad day” for the force.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the sudden and tragic loss of a member of the Dyfed-Powys police family,” the force added in a statement.
“Sergeant Lynwen Thomas was a highly respected serving police officer, who passed away after a collision last night.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues, who have been offered specialized support.”
Suspect
“The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in police custody.
“Investigations into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing and witnesses are asked to come forward.”
